Frequently Asked Questions

Bidding & Points

How does bidding work?

When a task is created, all house members can place a bid. The lowest effort bid wins; that person gets assigned the task. Once they complete it, they earn the effort points they bid. This way, people who want a task, or find it easy, naturally volunteer by bidding lower effort.

Why would I want to bid low if I earn fewer points?

Bidding low means you are more likely to win tasks you actually prefer. Hate doing dishes but do not mind vacuuming? Bid high on dishes so someone else wins them and low on vacuuming so you get it. Over time, everyone gravitates toward tasks they are comfortable with.

What is willingness mode in the bid slider?

Willingness mode is optional and can be enabled in User Settings. It shows a mirrored pair: willingness on the left and effort on the right. They are linked by willingness + effort = 21, so increasing one lowers the other. Effort is still the value used for task assignment and points.

What happens when there is a tie?

House admins can choose the tie policy in House Settings. Ties can be resolved manually by selecting a tied bidder, automatically by random draw, or by assigning the tied bidder with fewer total points, with random draw if those points are equal.

Why is my maximum bid restricted?

If you are behind on points, your maximum bid gets lowered. This nudges you to take on more tasks, since lower bids win more often, so you can catch up. The further behind you are, the more your range narrows. The person in the lead always has the full bidding range, from 1 to 20.

What are default values?

Default values are automatic bids placed on your behalf when you do not bid manually. For example, set a default of 3 for Wash Dishes and that bid gets placed every time without you having to do anything. You can set one general default and override it per task.

What do Effort Done, Effort Received, and Effort Ratio mean?

Effort Done is the total points you earned by completing tasks. Effort Received is the sum of your lost bids on completed tasks, which represents support others provided for work you were willing to do. Effort Ratio is received divided by done. Higher is better for personal value: above 1.0x means you received more support value than you contributed in that period.

How can many members be above 1.0x, and why is that good?

Effort Received is intentionally not zero-sum. One completed task creates one winner, Effort Done, but can create lost bids for multiple other members, so support value can appear for several people at once. That is good: the app is coordinating coverage so tasks still get done while more members receive practical relief and can focus on chores they bid lower on.

Tasks

What is the difference between premade and custom tasks?

Premade tasks come from a built-in catalog of 100+ common household chores, organized by room, such as Kitchen, Bathroom, and Living Room. Custom tasks are ones you name yourself for anything not in the catalog.

How do recurring tasks work?

Set a task to repeat on a schedule: daily, weekdays only, weekends only, weekly, monthly, or yearly. Octidy automatically creates new instances each time, and each one goes through its own independent bidding cycle.

What do the task statuses mean?
  • Pending: open for bidding.
  • Tie: two or more lowest bids are equal and someone needs to assign it.
  • Assigned: a winner has been chosen and needs to complete it.
  • Done: finished and points awarded.
What are room divisions?

Divisions like Kitchen, Bathroom, and Garden help organize tasks. Premade tasks are grouped by division so you can quickly browse and find what you need.

Houses & Members

How do I create a house?

Tap the + button on the main screen and select Create House. Give it a name everyone will recognize, like Apartment 4B or The Smiths, and you are ready to invite people.

How do I invite people?

Every house has a unique invite code. Go to House Settings to view, copy, or share it. Others join by tapping Join House and entering the code. You can regenerate the code at any time; the old one will stop working.

Can I be in multiple houses?

Yes. You might have one for your apartment and another for a vacation home. The main screen shows all your houses, and the calendar can display tasks from all of them.

Who can create or manage tasks?

Any house member can create tasks, place bids, and assign tied tasks. House admins additionally manage house administration, such as deleting the house, appointing or removing admins, and removing non-admin members.

Calendar & Filters

What does the calendar show?

All your tasks across all houses, organized by date. Switch between month view, a grid overview with task icons on each day, and week view, with detailed day-by-day task cards.

How do the filters work?

The filter button lets you show or hide task categories: Action Needed, tasks that need your bid; Waiting, tasks where you are waiting on others; Recurring, repeated tasks; and Done, completed tasks. These filters work in both the house view and the calendar.

Why do I see the same task multiple times?

Those are separate instances of a recurring task. Each one has its own bidding cycle. You can use the Recurring filter to control their visibility.

Account & Profile

How do I change my username?

Open User Settings from the profile menu in the top-right header circle. Edit your username and tap Save.

How do I enable willingness in bidding?

Open User Settings and turn on Show willingness mirror in the Bidding section. This only changes how bid controls are displayed for your account; scoring still uses effort points.

How do profile photos work?

If you sign in with Google, Octidy can use your Google photo URL when available. You can also set a photo URL manually in User Settings. If no valid URL is set, the app shows your username initial.

What if my avatar URL stops working?

Go to User Settings and update the profile photo URL. If the URL is invalid or inaccessible, Octidy automatically falls back to your initial.

Notifications & Sync

Why do updates sometimes appear with a short delay?

The app uses fast local cache plus server sync. You may briefly see cached data before live updates arrive from Firestore.

Can I use Octidy offline?

You can still view cached tasks and houses while offline. Changes sync to the server automatically when connectivity returns.

What should I do if data looks out of date?

Use pull-to-refresh on the screen you are in. If needed, close and reopen the screen to force a fresh real-time sync.
